Kimberley College Year 7 Flexible Learning Area
Kimberley College wanted to create a flexible learning area to accommodate Year Seven students as they migrate into high school. Believing that learning is achieved through curriculum teaching, student collaboration and engagement with the surrounding environment, it was important that classroom spaces facilitated this progressive teaching philosophy.
The design reflects this philosophy by combining adaptable indoor learning spaces with flexible outdoor spaces, large enough for full class groups, giving students many varied opportunities for interaction, performance, collaboration and connection to nature.
Energising bursts of colour were used in the furnishings and flooring while timber feature accents accentuate the surrounding bushland. Hexagons became a key feature in classrooms, used in the roof and flooring to create a harmonising yet interesting focal point and in desks to encourage greater collaboration between students. Knowing that poor acoustics and excessive background noise in the classroom can negatively impact learning, classrooms had considered acoustic treatment and detailing.
