Kimberley College Junior School
Guymer Bailey Interiors was asked to design the inside of the new Junior School that would become home to 100 primary school students. The Junior School, which needed its own separate identity, included two double classrooms separated by a shared play area.
The entryway, which was designed from a child’s perspective, features a welcoming play box with the indigenous message “UNYAH” which means “our native land”. Inside, fun and bright breakout spaces that form part of the furniture are introduced in each of the classrooms.
The geometric triangles that feature in the colourful forest canopy roof structure above the outdoor play area are subtly reflected on the floor of the classrooms to add vibrancy and consistency through the design. The colours and materials used throughout the design were indicative of the surrounding landscape and designed to connect the indoor and outdoor learning areas. Bright and playful zones were created in each classroom for different learning opportunities. While these zones provided structure to classes, they were also designed to be flexible, allowing teachers to make classroom layout changes easily.
