Burnie Courts Complex Relocation
GB-A, in partnership with Xsquared Architects (XSA), has been engaged by the Department of Justice (Tasmania) to deliver the Burnie Courts Complex Relocation project. The new facility, to be situated on Wilson Street in Burnie’s CBD near the Police Station and essential client services, is designed to significantly enhance access to justice across Tasmania’s North and North West regions. The complex will offer four courtrooms—comprising a Supreme Court, two Magistrates Courts, and a flexible fourth courtroom—accommodating current needs and anticipated future demand.
This development replaces the existing 1970s court building on Alexander Street, which no longer serves the operational or functional requirements of a contemporary justice facility. The design of the new Court Complex emphasises innovation, sustainability, and a strong civic presence which reflects the gravitas of the courts. Drawing inspiration from the local coastal landscape, the material palette features cladding in rich earthy tones reminiscent of fertile soils, limewashed bricks echoing coastal sandstone, and locally sourced timber battens and bricks. The use of a glazed façade maximises natural light, promoting transparency, openness, and a welcoming environment.
The Burnie Courts Complex aims to deliver improved safety, amenity, and accessibility for all court users, including enhanced disability access. Contemporary design and technology will enable more efficient daily court operations, ultimately reducing case resolution times. By providing state-of-the-art, fit-for-purpose infrastructure, the new complex is set to meet the needs of Burnie and surrounding communities both now and into the future, supporting the evolving demands of Tasmania’s justice system.
