Kings Beach Foreshore Redevelopment
The Kings Beach redevelopment balances Caloundra’s sun and beach culture with an abundance of shade, shelter and colour offering residents and visitors something unique. Redevelopment here meant converting an existing caravan park and car parking area into a family beach destination. The design sought to create a recognisable character and a memorableand timeless Kings Beach experience.
Guymer Bailey Architects and Briggs Peterson Buhr Architects won this project through a design competition run by the former Caloundra City Council. We led the project design team.
The redevelopment involved a five-stage program comprising a new car park and parkland adjoining Kings Beach. Then followed a double-stage structure with an amphitheatre and ilities including playgrounds, picnic and barbecue shelters, and a new swimming pool. Other entertainment and comfort services lift the Kings Beach experience.
A beachfront boardwalk with strategically placed shelters lead to particular beach access zones, while also giving beach-goers and walkers a rest and observation point. The redevelopment promotes a ‘sense of place’that has become identifiable as what Kings Beach standsfor, namely, structures, designs and materials that reflect Queensland’s coastal, tropical culture and environment.
