Lockyer Valley Correctional Centre

The Lockyer Valley Correctional Centre is a landmark infrastructure project for Queensland. The state-of-the-art facility will create 1536-beds for male prisoners and lead to safer, less crowded, and more effective prisons state-wide.

With a strong focus on rehabilitation, the design includes the deliberate progression of accommodation from cellular to residential styles to incentivise pro-social behaviour. To minimise the institutional feel of the facility and encourage family visitation, biophilic principles including the targeted use of natural light, improved acoustics, views and access to nature and natural materials have been used. The design has also given prisoners greater access to education, support, and health services, through the decentralisation of these areas, which also minimises prisoner movement across the site.

The new facility also includes a discreet 24-bed Complex Behaviours Unit, the first of its kind in Queensland. The specialist facility will provide much-needed support for prisoners with chronic mental health conditions who had previously been placed in mainstream or management units.
