Lockyer Valley Correctional Centre Health Facility
GB-A was engaged as Principal Consultant for the new Lockyer Valley Correctional Centre (LVCC), a landmark infrastructure project for Queensland. The $816m facility will create 1536-beds for male prisoners and lead to safer, less crowded, and more effective prisons state-wide. LYCC was designed to provide a gradation of health and mental health services across the site, including:
- Dedicated medical and psychological consultation spaces within each accommodation community to improve access
- 10 bed sub-acute inpatient service ward
- A 12-bed sub-acute mental health safety unit designed to cater for prisoners experiencing an acute mental health episode and who might be at high risk of self-harm
- Centralised outpatient facilities for more specialist services
- A 24-bed complex behaviour unit to cater for prisoners with chronic mental health and cognitive impairments. The unit is designed with 4 x 6 bed units with dedicated support, consulting and counselling spaces. The communal spaces of the unit are designed to provide a variety of seating options that provide opportunities to encourage pro-social behaviour and interactions.
The new facility also includes a discreet 24-bed Complex Behaviours Unit, the first of its kind in Queensland. The specialist facility will provide much-needed support for prisoners with chronic mental health conditions who had previously been placed in mainstream or management units.
