McKinnon Sports Park

GB-A were engaged to reimagine the McKinnon Sports Park in Yarrabilba, beginning with a comprehensive site analysis and survey to determine the optimal location for a new clubhouse. After evaluating four potential sites within the park, the area central to the touch football fields, near an existing amenities building, was selected as the preferred location due to its accessibility and functionality.

The new clubhouse features a central club room designed for both sporting and community events, supported by a commercial kitchen and administration facilities. The existing amenities block was remodelled to include public unisex toilets and four change rooms that can be divided into two large change rooms as needed.

A key design principle was ensuring clear sight lines across the park, achieved through a pavilion-style layout. This approach not only provides unobstructed views for spectators and users but also enhances safety through Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles, encouraging natural surveillance by allowing visibility through and between the buildings. The McKinnon Sports Park Clubhouse is a thoughtful integration of functionality, community needs, and innovative design, creating a space that serves as a vibrant hub for both sports and local events.
