Royal Hobart Hospital
Guymer Bailey Landscape was engaged by Royal Hobart Hospital to design courtyard spaces that would assist with patient wellbeing and recovery, and create a sense of normality and respite during hospital stays and visits.
The internal theme of the hospital has been inspired by Antartica, with patterns on the floor reminiscent of ice sheets that radiate from white to blue. This theme is carried through the outdoor environment, which has been designed to signify Tasmania, creating a sense of “coming home” after being away when entering the courtyard.
Native Tasmanian plant species, similar to those a child will find in their backyard, were chosen for the vegetation to create a sense of familiarity. This also has the added benefit of keeping gardens low maintenance. The courtyards feature both active and passive outdoor spaces, which cater for rehabilitation activities, outdoor gathering and private contemplation within a soft natural backdrop.
Stage A works included the refurbishment and extension of an existing two-storey classroom block as well as the construction of a new covered walkway through the centre of the school.
