The Kooralbyn International School – Performing Arts and Technology Centre

GB-A was engaged to design The Kooralbyn International School (TKIS) Performing Arts and Technology Centre. Having worked closely with TKIS on multiple projects over the last decade, the long-awaited Performing Arts Centre was the next stage in the masterplan, situated on the steep slope at the rear of the campus.

The brief was to create a facility that would deliver not only classes in performing arts, but also visual arts, media, music, and design and technology studies. A stepped central auditorium follows the natural slope of the site and is serviced by flexible smaller learning areas on two levels.

There is no fixed seating, and the students sit on a series of wide tiered steps which also act as a flexible learning space. The facility has been designed to seat 300 students. There is lift access from the level 1 entrance foyer to a level 2 gallery, which has views on three sides into the main auditorium. The new building has commanding views across the Kooralbyn valley and beyond.
