VCC Courts Conversions and Foyer Redesign
Guymer Bailey was engaged by Court Services Victoria to refurbish courtrooms and public spaces within the County Court of Victoria, supporting evolving court operations, strengthening security and improving the experience of judicial officers, staff and visitors. The project sought to balance the complex requirements of security, accessibility, operational functionality and public amenity within one of Victoria’s busiest civic environments, delivering contemporary facilities without compromising the dignified character expected of a major courthouse.
The refurbishment included upgrades to courtroom interiors and the ground-floor entry foyer with the replacement of existing security screening equipment being a key driver of the project. The design carefully balanced increased security requirements with functionality, flexibility and user experience, incorporating improved sightlines, controlled access arrangements, updated finishes, enhanced lighting and refined circulation pathways to support intuitive navigation, efficient court operations and equitable access for all users.
Through considered planning and stakeholder consultation, the design delivers secure, functional and welcoming environments that support the administration of justice while remaining largely invisible to the people who use them. By discreetly integrating security requirements with improved accessibility, user comfort and operational efficiency, the project demonstrates how thoughtful interior design can optimise court operations while reinforcing the civic presence and public confidence expected of a contemporary courthouse.
